Sawai Madhopur Attractions: What to do in Sawai Madhopur
The great question: "Will you see a tiger? The fact is they are rather illusive and everyone has opinions about which route to take, the time of day to go, etc. Here is a little...

"The tracks were really bumpy, and the number of trucks and jeeps in high season must make viewing less likely, but the sight of tigers in the wild was wonderful. We also saw lots of deer, monkeys, all sorts of birds including peacocks, and a flash of leopard as she dropped her kill and disappeared a..."t the sound of our truck.

"Two afternoon and two morning safaris. Lucky enough to see a tiger on the first one – really close too, walked within a couple of meters from our jeep. Cub – 18 months or so. It hung around near the crowds of tourists for a good half hour or so. That was the only tiger we saw. The landscape of the p..."ark was amazing and the old fort ruins added to this. We saw other animals like spotted deer, sambar, antelopes, Indian gazelle, monkeys, a golden woodpecker, buzzards and many other birds.
We were very disappointed with all the government appointed guides and drivers we had (except the last ones). They weren't very forthcoming about sharing information about the park and it's flora and fauna, even when explicitly asked to be. And one of the drivers attempted to cut one of our safaris short - we had to argue with him to get him to return to the park. Our final guide (we didn't get her name, unfortunately) was decent, as was our last driver – Vimal Chauhan.
Overall, the park was great...

We saw lots of animals on all three safaris - langoor monkeys, spotted deer, Sambar deer, antelope, mongoose, Indian hare, crocodile,..." etc. We also saw lots of birds, especially peacocks and peahens. However, the tiger was elusive on the first two safaris. Finally on our third and last try we found a tiger! There it was, just 10 feet from us. Wow! Made it it all worth while.
There are two types of vehicles available jeeps (gypsys) and canters. The canters hold about 20 people. We were in a canter, which I'm told is the least preferable. However, it worked for us. There are two tour times per day and the park is only open from Oct. 1 - June 30. Only 4 cantors and 6 jeeps are allowed into each of the 9 open zones of the park. Each vehicle is randomly assigned (by computer) to one of the zones and you must stay in...
