Pistachio Tree Ranch is owned and operated by the McGinn Family and is home to 12,500 trees and 6,000 wine producing grapevines. The original trees were planted in 1980 and the first nuts were harvested in 1984. Today, Pistachio Tree Ranch is a fully integrated farm where the McGinn Family grows pistachios, makes pistachio candy and packages pistachio products sold on their farm and around the United States. Arena Blanca Winery features the McGinn Family's wines produced on the farm from grapes grown in their vineyard. The World's Largest Pistachio monument was finished in 2008 and was built as a tribute to Tom McGinn, whose vision was to grow pistachios in the New Mexico desert. It stands 30 feet tall and has been featured in New Mexico Magazine, National Geographic Traveler, and Parade Magazine. It was filmed in 2010 in the movie, "This Must Be The Place," and on the History Channel's "Only in America" with Larry the Cable Guy in December 2012. Visit the farm and winery year around, open daily.

"Seeing that much sand and watching them plow it off the roads is awesome. I wanted to go sledding on the dunes but my husband said no. Since I'm a senior with a bad back, I didn't do it but will regret it. I don't know if I'd want to drive around in the dark."
"This place was awesome. Definitely a unique experience. Half the time it looked like we were at the beach without an ocean and the other half of the time it looked like snow! We got there a little before the sunset tour. We were able to stop at the gift shop to buy a sled. The sled cost $15 and sled..." wax was 75c. Apparently they will buy it back for $5 but unfortunately we didn't get to do that as the gift shop closed promptly at 7. So if you go for the sunset your (7:45pm sunset last night and the tour starts an hour before) and do a little sledding there is no time to visit the gift shop after which seems kind of silly to me. You would think the shop would stay open until the park closes...at 9pm.
Anyway. The tour was cool and provided some neat little facts. The sunset was a bust unfortunately as it was a cloudy evening but it was still beautiful. If you wanna go sledding you need to drive further out to the steeper/longer dunes otherwise you won't be able to get much momentum. ...

"Take a special trip to visit White Sands. Buy a sled at gift shop($10 for used if they have some, you'll get $3 back if you return it.) find a dune and have fun! It's not just for kids. My wife and I are in our 50's and we enjoyed it as well. Make sure you buy a chunk of ski wax also to wax up t..."he bottom of the sled for faster sledding. We also did every hike except Alkali Flats. It was neat trying to identify all the animal tracks in the sand in the morning before the wind picked and covered everything up. Sunset stroll with park volunteer was worth it and we were treated with beautiful sunset. Brings lots of water, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
