At 509 meters high, this was the world's tallest building from 2004 to 2010, when the Burj Khalifa in Dubai surpassed it. The tower is reminiscent of a pagoda or a stalk of bamboo and designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes common in Taiwan. Floors one through five are a shopping center and both the indoor (89th floor) and outdoor (91st floor) observation decks offer a 360-degree panoramic view.

Its length is about two hundred meters, and its architecture dates back to the early days when the Republic of China was newly established. Architecture buffs will enjoy this display of Japanese colonial architecture. Peruse historic relics and stores selling art and ceramics. Be sure to visit Zushi Temple, considered to be one of the most beautifully sculpted in Taiwan.

"Getting to the museum on public transport requires a subway and then bus. Worth the trip as the museum provides some great context for the rest of Taiwan. Chinese art is incredible with explanations of the significance of items along with special exhibits. Great for a rainy afternoon."
"Like watching the changing of the guards at Arlington cemetery - very efficient and mechanical - rather than the amateurish version in Santiago de Chile. Timings seem to vary - people mentioned 9am, but I saw it at 12 noon. Maybe every hour. Give yourself enough time to visit the free Chiang Kai-She..."k museum downstairs and time to walk from the metro.

"It's not cheap to go up 101 but worth getting the birds eye view of the city. The entrance is located on 5th floor of the shopping arcade, so you have to approach the express lifts via several flights of escalators passing luxury goods stores en route.
Do make the effort to walk up to the open air ..."viewing platform (if open) and to see the gold coloured damper.
