Wednesday 11th November and we visited Gran Tarajal and its beach which are located on the southeastern coast of the island.

The dark sandy beach, with its clear waters, stretches about  700 metres along the coast and can reach a depth of around 90 metres, depending on tidal movements. It is flanked by dark coloured cliffs/headland at one end and the Port at the other.

When we visited, the beach was practically deserted, think the weather was a contributing factor.

There were no sunbeds or umbrellas on the beach. However, there were a number of activities there including a volleyball court, football pitch and children’s play area.

A promenade runs the length of the beach with a number of cafes and restaurants along it. There are also a number of statues and sculptures on the promenade.

Although impressive and you can get a mural map from Tourist information some are quite faded and not as per pictures. Still worth a visit as something to do in the area.

Wednesday 11th November and we walked along the seafront promenade at Gran Tarajal (Avineda Paco Hierro) leading up to the Port.

Dotted the length of the Promenade are a number of statues and sculptures, some are more eye catching than others.

A few of them have been reviewed separately, A Ti Muker, Estadua de Neptune and La Zahra del tomato and The Surfer.

There is no theme to all the sculptures and statues, they are all rather random ranging from a tomato picker to a whale skeleton and so much more.

Definite favourite was the lady in the spotted dress, standing on a chair, just fun.

The beauty of these statues they can be interpreted in any way by the viewer, some are easier to give meaning to than others.

On their own some are just ordinary, however, in conjunction with all the other statues and sculptures along the promenade, well worth a look.

Monday 16th November and we had just been to visit the amazing Faro del Entallada and it's Mirador. On our way back from the lighthouse we stopped of at Las Playitas to sightsee and explore.

It is a picturesque coastal village which is located on a steep hill the east coast of the Island.

We parked up in the town and strolled through the narrow winding streets down to the beach. At one end of the beach there is a small fishing harbour protected by a wall. At the other end is another beach, Playa de los Pobres. Both are situated in a bay flanked on either side by dark volcanic cliffs.

A promenade runs the length of the beach, with a couple of restaurants on it. When we visited the tide was in so the beach was covered by the waves which were lashing up against the promenade wall. In fact we had to scurry along the promenade in places avoiding getting splashed and wet

People were using the steps from the promenade down into the sea. Despite not being able to see the beach it was a delightful place to visit

Wednesday 11th November and we walked along the seafront promenade at Gran Tarajal (Avineda Paco Hierro) leading up to the Port.

Dotted the length of the Promenade are a number of statues and sculptures.

This statue (art installation) was certainly the most memorable and definitely our favourite.

It depicts a lady in a red and white spotted dress standing on a chair by the beachfront. It is possible that she is dressed as a clown, prefer to view it as a zany fun lady. It is certainly a piece of fun and frivolity by the beach.

There was a small park across the road from the statue and all the furniture and lamp posts were decorated with red and white spots.

Wednesday 11th November on we took a stroll along the beachfront at Gran Tarajal.

There are a number of sculptures and statues along the promenade, including this one.

It is called La zafra del tomate which literally translates as "The Tomato Harvest".

This is one of the statues that is easy to understand and readily recognisable what it is, unlike some others.

This bronze statue depicts a woman carrying a basket on her head filled with tomatoes that she had just harvested.

Someone thought it rather humorous to place a face mask on the statue.

Wednesday 11th November and we visited Gran Tarajal which is situated along the coast, some 45 Kilometres south of the capital, Puerto del Rosario.

It is the Island's second largest town, after the capital and it takes its name from the Tamarisk tree, which is native to the area.

We walked along the seafront promenade, admiring the various statues, on our way to the port/harbour/marina.

Histrorically the town eveolved because of the busy port, which shipped almost all of the agricultural produce from the island. Sadly it is not as important anymore as most shipping in now out of Puerto del Rosario. Also at one time there was a ferry connecting Gran Tarajal and Las Palmas.  This service is no longer operational and there  no ferries use the port. However, the odd cruise ship does visit.

There are roughly 250 moorings which are used by fishing boats, tourists and leisure craft.

There are some interesting sculptures/statues by the port. Having walked along the seafront, upto the port, we had a quick look.

Wednesday 11th November and we walked along the seafront promenade at Gran Tarajal (Avineda Paco Hierro) leading up to the Port.

This metal statue, which depicts a surfer on their board, is situated near the Port area of the town.

The statue is nothing special, however, combinded with all the other statues and sculptures along the promenade, it contributes to making the area an interesting place to stroll around.

This stone statute is situated on the Promenade along the beachfront at Gran Tarajal.

It is one of a number of statues and sculptures there leading up to the Port.

It depicts a woman carrying a basket on her head whilst clutching a child by her legs.

The statue is called " A Ti Mujer" which literally translates as "To you Woman".

It was unveiled on 25th November 2009, as this date is the International day against gender violence, which the statue is dedicated to.

This is another one of the many statues and sculptures that are dotted along the seafront promenade in Gran Tarajal.

The metal sculpture depicts the head and torso of Neptune brandishing his trident in his right hand. It sits on a metal partial circled structure which we thought to be the crest of a wave. We deemed this was appropriate as Neptune is the Roman God of the sea.

That is the beauty of these statues they can be interpreted in any way by the viewer.

On its own it is a ordinary sculpture, however, in conjunction with all the other statues and sculptures along the promenade, well worth a look.

Wednesday 11th November and we walked along the seafront promenade at Gran Tarajal (Avineda Paco Hierro) leading up to the Port.

Just before the Port there is a roundabout where this statue is located at it's centre.

There was no information about the small metal crane. We formed a view that it was a relic from the Port, from the glory days, when it was a busy working Port, before its decline in importance and use.

There are a number of statues nearby, on their own some are just ordinary, however, in conjunction with all the others around, well worth taking a stroll to have a look.

Contacted Dean about 2 months before travelling. I wasn't flying from my local airport so I couldn't take my own bike. I've hired from a bike shop in Caleta before, however, when I saw that Dean had Giant TCR for rent I was delighted. This is one of the bikes that I own at home. Dean delivered the bike to the villa & was full of suggested routes. I had my own pedals & helmet. I've had a great week in the saddle. The bike is well maintained &I knew that if I encountered any problems, Dean was only a phone call away. If you're looking for a great bike, reasonable price for hire & excellent customer service you've found the right place.
