What travellers are saying
- SocccaTolmin, Slovenia1,541 contributionsNice square with a beautiful view on the town. It was a hot day when we were there, so we tried to escape as soon as possible to get a coffee in a shade.Written 4 July 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Keith TCanberra, Australia91 contributionsWe did a day trip by bus from Perugia to this picturesque township of Gubbio. After a coffee, the Palazzo Sei Consoli was a must do stop.
The structure itself is most impressive, especially when it was the seat of government of the free commune of Gubbio where the General Assembly of the people sat as the representative body of the people of the commune of Gubbio.
The exhibitions in the original building are of high standard and the captions (in Italian and English) show a hugh amount of work has been done to authenticate the objects as true and fair in what they represent. They provide most useful descriptions of the items and put them in the context of the day.
Of interest was the way the original Umbrian language was constructed (supported by engravings found on site dated back to the 15th century, known as the Iguvine Tables, mapping out the way society in the commune was to work). These tables (engraved on bronze) were probably writetn in the 1st century BC and before the Roman occupation of he area.
In fact, of further interest is the racial/tribal structure of Italy and nearby Slovenia/Croatia as we know it, before the Romans conquered the whole area.
Many displays showed pottery found on site, as well as a large variety of paintings from various epochs that were in the churches in the area. These are enhanced with some of the furniture used by the General Assembly.
The are many steps and I am not sure how those in wheel chairs can get around, but I expect there wil be a way.
The entry fee is most reasonable and very much well worh it.Written 25 June 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. If you wish for a snack, there are also a couple of bar nearby.Written 27 September 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - VoyagerAimerSourirePrinceton, NJ685 contributionsAs with most other Umbria's hillside towns, one just feels the urge to climb as high as possible within Gubbio, so after a walk up the Via Repubblica and then taking 2 municipal lifts, we got to Gubbio's Duomo. Very quiet and almost no visitors this high up in the town. Quiet simplicity, ideal for reflection.Written 23 July 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- G.B.871 contributionsUnfortunately, it was not possible to enter the museum, but even just for the view it's worth stopping here to admire Gubbio from above.Written 22 September 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Houlihan2Melbourne, Australia815 contributionsThe Antiquarium is built on the remains of the Domus di Scilla, which was large and wealthy, as can be seen from the amazing floor mosaics, ranging from the 1st century BC to 2nd century AD. The main floor mosaic depicts the monster Scylla capturing Ulysses’ companions and wrapping them up in its coils. The monster, at the centre of the scene, is represented as a bare-breasted female with acanthus leaves at its ends and has fierce dogs’ heads biting Ulysses’ companions heads. According to Homer, Ulysses is warned by Circe against Scylla, the sailor-devouring monster with twelve feet and six horrible heads at the end of many long necks, half of a human female, with a fish tail and dogs coming out of its hips or shoulders. There is an interesting collection of relics from the necropolis. The Inguvine Tablets refer to Gubbio, a suburb of Fontevole. One of the relics is a bronze bed. Part of the bed-head features a donkey head and a bust of Artemis. The donkey head is very realistic with a wispy mane and dilated nostrils. Artemis’ hair is parted in two bands. She has big eyes, a half-open mouth and quiver of arrows on her right shoulder. One from the 2nd century is of a marble perfectly formed foot. Part of an iron rim of a male-type parade chariot. The lamina together with a series of big square-head nails belonged to the wheels, of which the wooden part is lost.Written 4 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ERIC WKnoxville, TN4,215 contributionsBeautiful old church near the bottom of town. First stop on our visit to Gubbio and with free entry it’s certainly worth checking outWritten 27 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - G.B.871 contributionsThe strange tradition of Gubbio is just this: to run three laps around the fountain (preferably a local must be present), and then to be bathed with the water of the fountain itself. At that point it is possible to receive the "crazy license" (but if you want to do it before, you can buy it in one of the small stores present on the square). The origins of this tradition are many, although the most accredited is that it is a ritual ( since 1880) performed during a local festival: people make fast laps around the flagpole in Piazza Grande. Curious is the fact that some studies are investigating the fact that the whole area has been, in the past, contaminated with Iridium, a toxic substance that would explain the madness of colors who have come into contact with it!Written 22 September 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - JohJ105 contributionsAs we visited the church there was a party going next door. The dance music and the noisy youth disturbed for a bit our visit.
But the church is worth visiting. An altar with a large hanging cross is taking your attention. But there's more to discover on and in the walls on the left side and right side.Written 28 June 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - G.B.871 contributionsDon't feel bad if Trip advisor says "closed until further notice," because the exhibit may be closed right now, but be usable when you plan to go there. Simply go to the website to see established days and hours of operation. In this exhibition you can see life-size reproductions of dinosaurs from different eras. The location is particularly interesting: it is the Cloister of the Convent of St. Benedict (almost like making two visits in one), which leads to very curious juxtapositions of images (see the photos to believe). Recommended for adults and children.Written 22 September 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
