I heard a guide say most of the frescos are gone because in centuries past the Basilica was used as a hospital during plague times and the walls needed to be scraped so the disinfectant wash could stick to them. I think the lack of decoration gives the building an air of peace and invites one to sit awhile. Besides the cross from San Damiano the crypt has many items used or associated with the two saints.
