"When I was a child I developed at special attachment to San Francesco. Visiting Assisi more than 60 years after forming that attachments was a very moving experience. This building is unique in that it was built as a spontaneous act of love. When the church was nearly completed the people felt it..." did not convey their feelings properly so upon its completion they started the second church above it.. Some of the greatest artists contributed to the building. I prefer the lower church to the upper but the crypt which was added centures later above all. Still it made me very sad. I recalled how the Church took Francis' order away from him and changed it so that this little man could bring in riches he so much abhored to fill the Church's treasury. If you wish to see something of Francis seek out the little church of Santo Stefano; a little 12th Century church located just outside the town square. This tiny church appears much as it did when San Francesco preached there. Francis' b...

"Very pleasant and not too strenuous walk up from the town and excellent views from the castle and lookout tower, accessed by an interesting long tunnel corridor."
"Located on a lively square with a fountain and a view of Assisi (including Chiesa Santa Maria Maggiore) and the plain below. Anyone interested in San Francesco and Santa Chiara will want to see this lovely church for here is the Cross from San Damiano that is said to have spoken to St Francis and s..."tarted him on his way. The outside is made up of alternating bands of the local white and soft pink limestone. The inside is actually quite plain compared to the interior of San Francesco. I heard a guide say most of the frescos are gone because in centuries past the Basilica was used as a hospital during plague times and the walls needed to be scraped so the disinfectant wash could stick to them. I think the lack of decoration gives the building an air of peace and invites one to sit awhile. Besides the cross from San Damiano the crypt has many items used or associated with the two saints. A happy place that may give you a feeling of renewal.
