"We visited the Croix Rousse as part of a guided tour of the silk district so earned the history of the buildings, the tall windows, the battened ceilings and the Traboules. We went back so we could have a more leisurely walk around the hill, from which there are lovely views of Lyon and the surroun..."ding district. We found some beautiful old churches and also found a very impressive mural which covered the whole wall of a corner-situated multi-storey building so that it looked like a number of buildings with a street, families etc. There are plenty of good restaurants and cafés.

Museum of Gallo-Roman Civilization (Musee de la Civilisation Gallo-Romaine)
"High rating fully deserved. We took advantage of the free entry on Thursdays, but actually had trouble finding the place as the unique design of the museum is that it is buried in a hillside and almost invisible from the outside - very easy to overlook, especially since one's attention goes automat..."ically to the adjacent restored Roman amphitheater. A smiling employee dressed all in red met us on the path, informed us (without being asked) that it was free entry day, and pointed us back to the museum entrance we had walked right past. Staff inside the museum were also unusually helpful and communicative. The visit to the museum is a very direct way to get in touch with the rich history and strong influence of the Roman presence in Lyon and the area, and enables one to make more sense of the architectural feel of the city, even in new buildings, and the character of the people.

"Information about the tour can be found on the door to the tower on your right when facing the main entrance of the basilica. It is such an amazing experience. You will see the church inside from a very unique angle, be in the bell tower (hopefully it doesn't ring while you're in there like it did f..."or us!), walk along the edge of the roof, and get the most amazing view of Lyon from the top of the tower. There is also a very neat room where the acoustics make it sound like you're talking into a microphone. You must try it when you're guide asks if anyone wants to! It is incredible, and you don't know how special it is until you do it. I've gone on the tour twice, and it was just as incredible the second time. You also get a history of the church, which is cool because it is very different from other churches in that it is not actually that old! Must be able to climb stairs (sometimes steep).
