According to legend, two brothers kept trying to return a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, to the Sumida River only to have it returned to them the next day. This temple located in Tokyo's Asakusa district was built to honor her.

The stores in this neighborhood sell kitchen equipment and paper supplies to the city's restaurants. Of note are the specialty plastic food items, which are placed in restaurant windows to show passersby what goodies are being served inside.

"I visited Asakusa on the first day of the Sanja Maritsu festival which happens on the third weekend of May and it was amazingly alive. There were small shops all around the Sensoji temple selling wonderful foods, candies, and souvenirs. There were neighborhoods preparing their wonderful floats, la..."nterns everywhere, and a general party atmosphere. Even when the festival isn't on this is one of the most fun areas of Tokyo. Don't miss it.

"I visited the Honkan which is the core Japanese collection of the Tokyo National Museum. It's well organized and reasonably comprehensive. The first floor is organized by media (e.g., ceramics, metal, armor, screen paintings). The second floor is organized chronologically. There's a lot to diges..."t. English language descriptions are concise, but clearly there is a lot more Japanese description. There are some nice rooms in the back overlooking the gardens. It's a a very good collection but not a the top tier of museums.

"Ueno Park is wonderful. There is a big lake with water lilies and lotuses, a boat pond with rental boats, some of the best museums in Tokyo, a zoo, shrines, and lots of open space. It's comparable to Central Park and the Museum Mile in New York City. Relax and enjoy."
