We had a nice walk to El Fosil, it was about 1.5 hours from Villa de Leyva and very scenic with amazing panoramas. However, the fossil itself is a bit underwhelming and the shops at the museum are terrible. Rotting meat, refrigerators weren't on to keep food cold - avoid eating anything there and take plenty of drinks and snacks...

In the museum is an impressive, nearly whole sea creature fossil and lots of other specimens from this area. It took about 30-40 minutes, including a stop at one of a few souvenir stalls to buy something. This site was part of a tour to a few Villa de Leyva attractions, such as Pozos Azules and Infiernito. My husband and I rented two dilapidated mountain bikes and made the hour ride out to El Fosil. It's a one room museum with the large fossil left in the same place it was discovered in back in the 1970s. You can buy an English pamphlet, which we didn't do. Mostly fun because of the ride out there...

It's very impressive to find out that in a remote and very high place like that, there's a fossil almost intact.
Also the picture of the finding is quite fun either.
If you've been in NY - Natural history Museum you may not like it, if you didn't you sure may go to see it.

fossils were great to look at but the museum is only a few rooms and there is no english translation on articles about exhibits.
