I second the view of "not worth the effort". In our case it occupied two days of our 12day tour with a lot of travel but little to experience. First it took 5 hrs to go from Zhang Jia Jie to Fenghuang. After spending the night there, we had to get up at 5am in order to leave at 6am...

I'm writing this as a review if Fenghuang in general. I came here because the photos I saw, and LP's recommendation, made it irresistible. Fortunately it was low season and crowds were not too overwhelming. Weather was great when we were there.Lovely old town. Not particularly friendly but not unwelcoming either. Slightly touristy as can be expected. You can spend 2 days walking around the old town. Not much in terms of English maps to guide you around. Having a guide was quite useful.
