We live near this beautiful reservoir, which is located about 8+ miles west of Redding. The lake can be enjoyed all year long. During the summer months it is a wonderful place to cool off...great boating opportunities (no houseboats), fishing, swimming, canoeing/kayaking, etc. There are many wonderful nature trails; several that lead to scenic waterfalls, which provides great photo opportunities....

My favorite are the FREE ranger lead Kayak tours. They take you around for a few hours and teach you about the lake and its history. The Rangers are SO friend and helpful. It is beautiful place. In April you can take the waterfall challenge and get a free bandana :-)

Stop off at the visitor center! They have bathrooms, a nice view, and all the maps/info you could need. We stopped at the Historic district which includes some restored buildings from the Boom Town days. The trail is well maintained and is a quarter mile. There is so much to do here. Kayak trips in the summer are free of any charges and the folks that take you out are great. Camping is a little hot and dusty, and hiking and wild life are everywhere.

Whiskeytown Lake is not run by private concessionaires. Access passes are accepted as full payment for visit and boat launches! RV " Campgrounds are nothing more than parking lots and cost a little more than reasonable with no Pass discount. Boat Launches are nice and easy to use with lots of room. Whiskey town is cleaner than Shasta Lake but...
