I've been to a few national battlefields across the country, and Vicksburg is one of the top ones. The 16-mile loop road is filled with historical markers and facts. I highly recommend starting your trip with a stop at the visitor center; they have many artifacts on display, and they have a video that is very educational regarding the battles... More

I've visited a great many Civil War battlefields ranging from well known parks such as Gettysburg and Ft. Sumter to lesser known sites such as Averasboro, NC and McDowell, VA. I was very impressed with Vicksburg NMP. The park is huge. If I recall correctly, a park ranger told me it is the second largest in area after Gettysburg. Start... More

Great memorial. Learned a great deal! Must watch the video in the visitor center at the beginning of the tour. More

We spent several hours at Vicksburg. It was surprising to see how hilly the terrain is and the strategies that were employed during this battle. We found that the cell phone tour was great: free and informative without giving a ton of details. AND...with all National Historic Parks, check out the video first to give you a broad brush understanding.... More

The 16 mile drive through the park is work the time. I suggest that you purchase the CD guided tour from the visitors center. More

The Park Service has done a great job with this battlefield. The plaques that have been placed throughout the park show visitors where each unit started the campaign, where they moved and when they engaged in combat. We spent 3.5 hours driving around and thoroughly enjoyed it. Be sure to buy the CD that guides your drive, otherwise you will... More

This is a very large park but beautiful and well worth the time. The 20 minute movie was informative. More

Spread out through the hills around Vicksburg. There is a park museum that starts you off. Then drive through the park and stop at the monuments along the way. My favorite is the Mississippi overlook. Absolutely do not skip the Cairo exhibit (an actual gunship raised from the river) More

I'd recommend watching the film before going on the car tour. The tour really gives an idea of the scope of the battlefield and numbers of soldiers involved. More
