The building was closed to tours when we visited, but it was fun to see the grandeur of this building up close and personal. The grounds are beautiful and well-maintained (except for the back of the building where they are doing construction).

Walking through the "new" Illinois State Capitol is worth the time and won't take too long if you want to fit it into a busy agenda that is likely to be filled with all of the other wonderful sites in Springfield. There are tours that leave from the central area on the first floor every 30 minutes or so on...

My son and I visited the Capitol on a Saturday morning. If you are interested in seeing the place without a lot of people, Saturday is a great time. On Sat they give free tours on the hour - except 12 & 1. Take the free tour! They start at the top and show you the Senate, House, Governor's office,...

The capital was actually a much better experience than I thought it would be. Granted, the General Assembly was not in session so that made it less exciting, but I would definitely recommend going. The free 20 minute tour is completely worth your time - you get to go into the House and Senate galleries and hear about the history...

I parked at the Lincoln Home Parking lot, and used the Kiosk to pay for parking while I walked to many of the downtown sites including the Capitol. The grounds of the capitol at...

Very large, ornately detailed building. Great for pictures and the plaza was very nice to walk around in and sit for a while. Didn't actually go in (it was Sunday) but nice to hang around in on a nice night.
The architecture in the building is so pretty. It is nice to visit. There are paintings all over which are beautiful.
Too many school groups pushing and shoving as 6-15 year old folks tend to do for us to REALLY enjoy it. The building is lovely, the security was fast and guards very friendly and it was free. Nice to see some of the displays and the statues, as well as to visit the galleries of the senate & house, though...

I have been living in Illinois for roughly five years, and I intend to stay, so I figured it was time to become a true Illinoisan (Illini?) and visit the capital. It was an enjoyable experience.
It is a beautiful state house. The dome is gorgeous. Both the Senate and House floors are gorgeous and intricate. We were able to...
