This is a short drive from Vegas, less than an hour. We stopped here on the the way to the Grand Cayon. There is a pay parking garage but if you drive past it and over the dam, you will find free parking spots. We were here before the tourist office opened in the morning which meant very few people... We drove here during the day. It's about a 45 minute drive from the Vegas strip. We didn't do the tour because, well..... I'm cheap. Walking around the damn outside was plenty enough. You can even go walk across the bridge and that has amazing views. It's worth driving there for an afternoon. More

This is a must see attraction if you are in the area! We loved it. If you go just as it is getting dark, it will take your breath with all the lights that surround the dam.. loved it! More

The lifts were not working on the day we visited so we could only do the visitor centre tour and the exhibitions. They did put an extra slide show on. The dam is huge and we found it very interesting learning about how it was constructed and why. More

Our first view of the dam was from the Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, a view previously only seen from a helicopter ride, and it was breathtaking. We loved the photo ops at Hoover Dam. However, we took the $11 tour and it was boring and added very little to our understanding about this spectacular place. The movie is very dated, too.
