It's best to take the cable car either first thing around 9 am or hold off until after the mid to late morning rush, otherwise you'll queue for ages. It's 20€ for a return trip so quite expensive, but it is worth it for the views.

If you are in St. Gilgen, please do not forget to try this.
It is expensive but, this is the best way to observe the Wolfgang Lake from the high.
The trip is amazing. Yhere is a Restaurant in the top.
If the weather is cold and/or cloudy, do not forget warm clothes.

We went on the cable car reasonably early in the morning which meant it wasn't too busy and managed to get a cab all to ourselves.
