You may be coming to the Black Hills National Forest to see Mount Rushmore, but there are so many other beautiful areas; Sylvan Lake in Custer State Park is our favorite place; our kids like to swim and climb on the rock outcroppings; also, there is a trailhead to Harney Peak; this is a great hike with the kids.

We drove here to have a picnic lunch and hike around the lake between visiting Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore. It was supposed to be a warm day when we were not in the hills. However, it was cold at the lake and it was still frozen. It was still beautiful. The rock outcroppings are incredible and we had fun... More

Very scenic little lake at the top of a great mountain drive. Very lonely in winter. Imagine it would be a fantastic spot in summer.

This is an absolutely gorgeous lake located at the edge of Needles Highway (a highway with amazing views of rock spires). Smaller (but still huge) spires stick out of this lake and create a breathtaking view. You can climb onto some of the spires and jump off into the surrounding deep water. You can also rent paddle boats, kayaks, and... More

This is one of the most beautiful places to visit while in the Black Hills. I can see why they have filmed several movies on location there. (such as National Treasure) Bring your cammera , walk around and enjoy the amazing beauty it has to offer.

After a fun-filled day of scenic drives and exploring Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake was the perfect pit stop for taking a cool dip in the water. The adults swam out to the rocks while our kids played on the beach. There were a fair number of people visiting when we were there, which was late afternoon/early evening. If I... More

After a day of hiking this lake is a perfect place to play mini-golf, swim, paddle boat or lay in the sun!

I spotted the Sylvan Lake as I drove the Needles Highway, a beauty of a lake with towering rocks at one end and a grassy area with picnic tables at the other. The lake sparkled in the sun and seemed the perfect spot for a picnic. I was prepared with a food basket in the trunk so I parked the... More
