The Lafayette Cemetery is one of the main attractions in NOLA and I can see it has significance historically, but the actual site is less than impressive. I believe the attraction is the fact that the tombs are not usual gravestones, they are mini-shrines or mini-houses in place of gravestones. The enormity of them is impressive, however, because I've seen... More

I'd been here before, and was inspired by the architecture of the graves, and the care they've received to be in such good condition now. However, on this trip, my timing was off. We arrived at 3 p.m., only to see that the cemetery's gates are closed and locked at 2:30 p.m. We were able to look though the gate,... More

Definitely book a guided tour to get the true experience of cemeteries in New Orleans! We were just going to walk around ourselves, but decided to book a tour at the bookstore right across the street! It's a really realy cool experience! Don't pass it up!! More

Take a guided tour through the cemetery. There is so much to learn about the above ground cemeteries that you will miss out on too much if you do it on your own. More

Due to New Orleans low altitude and swampy underpinnings, most old city graves are above ground in crypts. Lafayette Cemetery is good a place as any to experience the New Orleans style cemetery. While interesting, one can get the essential experience within 15 minutes of wandering around. The best reason for coming here, however, is that it is practically right... More

Although it's not the oldest or the most beautiful (according to our tour guide), Lafayette Cemetery is a must see when visiting the Garden District. It's located directly across the street from Commander's Palace and just a few short blocks from Magazine Street. Access to the streetcar is perfect, as it drops you off one or two blocks away, and... More

It was cool. I notices a lot of things altered for the ghost tours. The coffins and stuff are all built above ground. You should pay for the guide, its worth it. More

This was a nice little stop while walking through the Garden District. Only needed to spend about 20 minutes walking through - and watch your step! Lots of stuff to trip over :) More

We had been to St. Louis #1 which is closer to the French Quarter. Lafayette is in the Garden District and just as interesting. If I can remember which tour company we used, I will write another review for them. A tour is really a must to get the history city and how it developed under Spanish and French rule.... More
