I recently visited for the first time. I had a blast walking on the sand dunes. There were a lot of people sledding and boarding down the dunes. There are a few trails through the forested part of the park as well. The visitor's center has a good film and some nice exhibits on the area. This is a great... More

We enjoyed our visit to this National Park, and are grateful that the NPS is preserving this beautiful and unusual ecosystem. The Visitor Center movie does a great job explaining how the dunes were formed and how the mountains and dunes work together to bring this to existence. We enjoyed the rustic road - having driven a 4 wheel drive... More

It's hard to imagine sand dunes being at the foot of a mountain range in Colorado, but the sight is incredible. We were trying to cram in as much as we could on this vacation, so we didn't stay long at the Sand Dunes, but my 10 yr old son was impressed! Many people hike to the top of the... More

Great advice from the national park staff made for an exciting day here. We took a hike up to the high dune and received a great reward in the view for the hard work to climb. Would recommend wearing long pants as the winds cause the sand to fly and the experience can be painful in shorts.

These are the highest sand dunes in North America. One of them is 750 high. I climbed to the top when I came here a few years ago and intended to repeat the trip this year -- and even brought my gators to keep the sand out of my boots -- but the weather was too overcast for good photography... Absolutely amazing! As we approached the park we just could not believe the view. The dunes are nestled up to a mountain and massive. We walked up about 1/4 way and were surrounded by sand on all sides. Pictures do not do any justice to the beauty of this park. The welcome center is great. There is a picnic area... More

if you have a nice 4x4 head outto the right side of dunes, and you will find a table and a parking spot eventually. Big steep bowl on other side of shallow river. Walk up ridge and keep walking, hard work, have done it 12 times...usually one run a day, its a killer. 2 huge slopes to ski. Rainy day... More

15 of us hit the park on a sunny Saturday in early May and hiked to the top of High Dune (not actually the highest dune in the park - that honor is held by Star Dune, which is also the highest Dune in the United States). First - stop at the visitor center. Watch the brief video about the... More

We had never heard of this National Park before arriving in Colorado, and we are glad we went. It is refreshing to be told to climb on everything as opposed to being told to stay off. Climbed the dunes at the base of snow covered mountains and ate lunch surrounded by Black Tail deer. A wonderful day and we will... More
