The four of us had a beautiful day touring the lush Greenwood Cemetery on this breezy moderate almost summer day. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the founding of the cemetery as well as see where many famous people were buried. Also of interest were the unique headstones, monuments, and mausoleums. We took the trolley tour which... More

Very few New York tourists visit Green-Wood Cemetery, but I am glad I went. It is extremely beautiful, particularly in spring when the dogwood and magnolia blossoms are out. I took a trolley bus tour and was impressed by the amount of history the guide imparted. The cemetery is an important part of the stories of both New York and... More

Very large, almost overwhelming in scale, cemetery. A must see. Great view of Manhatten too. Take very comfortable walking shoes!

Just utterly beautiful. Unlike nearby Prospect Park, it was not at all crowded, and there is a serenity among the tombs, both illustrious and plain. Lots of famous historical figures "live" there. I wasn't really a traveler - I live a few blocks away and have lived in the same place for 20 years, BUT this is only the third... More

We booked on tour A for the 1pm Wednesday trolley tour. This covers about 1/3rd of the cemetery which is huge. The park like feel and interesting tombs and features make this visit a must. You can try walking the cemetery (its free) but its miles and miles of roads, and hills and we think it would be hard to... More

Who would ever think that visiting a cemetery could be so enlightening? In the mid-1800s this was a destination that rivaled Niagara Falls in New York State. There is a wonderful trolley tour that takes you up and down the hills of this famous cemetery. May was a beautiful month as the trees are in bloom and the grass was... More

I and 3 of my friends went on the Greenwood Cemetery's Trolly Tour. Some people might think a day at a cemetery is macabre but this place holds so much history, has beautiful architecture and landscaping, you'd hardly know you were touring a cemetery. We went when the hundreds of cherry blossom trees were in full bloom. Beautiful! The tour... More

A few colleagues and I took the trolley tour this past weekend. I was amazed by its expanse, beauty and views. I hadn't known this was the steepest spot in Brooklyn, and how many people of prominence are buried there. The cemetery truly is an outdoor museum! I am anxiously awaiting a new exhibition opening this mid-May at the Museum... More

If you can take a tour then you will be exposed to the rich history of this cementary. Even if there are no tours you can get a guidebook and do it on your own. Lots of walking but worth it. Really

Reading the monuments in this cemetery gives perspective on the lives of generations of New Yorkers. There are sculptures, poetry, and at times the many monuments seem to echo the skyline of the city in miniature.
