We travel this road all the time. It is a nice ride. Some places are quiet and others are busy. Part of Steese Highway goes thru Fairbanks so you have the hustle of the city on it.

Wonderful scenery--lots of mining activity leads to the arctic circle--one of my favorite drives!!!! Absolutely gorgeous. Always do hike during midnoc sun as sun never sets above the arctic circle!!! Wonderful hot springs at Central and Yukon River at native village of Circle.
A beautiful drive. It was stated to us several times this is a well maintained road... I'm not sure about that.... but it was beautiful.
We rode the Steese several nights to see the northern lights, and caution drivers to only drive this in the winter with snow tires, studded tires, and GREAT caution. We are from Pennsylvania and used to winter driving, and wouldn't drive outside of town when the roads are covered.
We drove about 35 miles up the Steese Highway...very scenic especially if you stop at SKILAND and take a breathtaking look around. Almost a 360 view from up there and they have great aurora viewing with a warming hut and free coffee! Driving can be treacherous on this highway and count on never being able to do the speed limit...

We drove up the Steese to the Ski Area then headed back down to Fairbanks. The view from the top was awesome. Great view of the White Mountains. Road was snowy in places but in excellent driving condition.
Returned this January for a third visit to the Fairbanks area, and frequently drove the Steese to the lodge where I stayed on Cleary Summit.
This year took a road trip to the town of Central, passing caribou along the way between Twelve Mile Summit and Eagle Summit. It was a lovely scenic drive with striking views by day and...

City snow removal lacked speed and efficiency. City council needs to add more workers and equiptment The city knows better, Fairbanks should do a better job since this so called storm was tiny!!!
Be careful when driving this highway. One night (at dusk) we encountered TWO moose that had been hit by cars, within a couple of miles of each other. They are massive and block the entire lane.
Drove up here twice, once in daylight (spotted the Alaska Trooper by thye 40 sign ) and then at night to enjoy the Aurora Borealis. Good road with parking pull offs.
