Based on the recommendations of the docents, we went on the southbound trail, so we could enjoy two ponds close by. They also were kind enough to let us know it was the season where the caterpillars are leaving their cocoons, and they drop from the trees ... well, really in some places they are almost raining from the trees..... The San Pedro house is just a short walk from the San Pedro River. Imagine, running water right here in the desert. The trails are well maintained, some right alongside the narrow chasma-like riverbed, so many cottonwood trees streamside. And of couse birds, yellow warblers, vermillion flycatchers, gray hawks, and many many more. Everyone on the trail walks quietly, so... More

We spent about two hours hiking. We saw some Vermilion Flycatchers by the river but also a wide variety of birds near the visitor center. The bookstore there is excellent and the staff were excellent in helping us identify the birds we had taken pictures of. More

Easy place to meander, and see birds, deer and the vibrancy of a river in an otherwise arid ecosystem. You could spend an hour or four hours. More

Staff knowledgeable. Lots of birds close to house. In winter cottonwood trees are dormant so not many birds to see near San Pedro River More

This place is truly an oasis in the desert, as the last review said, and my husband and I will be visiting as often as we can! We hiked the trails and counted skinks as we went. We walked through and played in the river and then sat and watched the kingfisher pond. It was an amazing day and we... More

If you are a birder, southeastern Arizona is the place to go. The San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area is a tremendous birding area with trails that lead through a meadow and down by the river attracting most of the avian wildlife that you would want to see. If you arrive during migration, either spring or fall, the meadow will... More
