Based on the recommendations of the docents, we went on the southbound trail, so we could enjoy two ponds close by. They also were kind enough to let us know it was the season where the caterpillars are leaving their cocoons, and they drop from the trees ... well, really in some places they are almost raining from the trees.....

A great place for a walk on good paths to view a variety of habitats from grassland to river valley. Good bookstore, very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Lots of feeders for viewing birds.

The San Pedro house is just a short walk from the San Pedro River. Imagine, running water right here in the desert. The trails are well maintained, some right alongside the narrow chasma-like riverbed, so many cottonwood trees streamside. We spent about two hours hiking. We saw some Vermilion Flycatchers by the river but also a wide variety of birds near the visitor center. The bookstore there is excellent and the staff were excellent in helping us identify the birds we had taken pictures of.

Easy place to meander, and see birds, deer and the vibrancy of a river in an otherwise arid ecosystem. You could spend an hour or four hours.
