Running every half hour and completely free the ferry is great way to see some sites from the water and enjoy the breezes. Ferries are good sized and comfortable with side windows that open to the water. At the end you can get off at the terminal and follow the crowd looping around to get back on for the return...

C'mon, can you really say you visited NYC without taking the Staten Island Ferry? It's an institution. Yup, it's a free trip across the harbour, and it gives you (distant) views of the Statue of Liberty. But the ferry itself is its own attraction. Don't be put off by the crowds inside the terminal. Even though there were lots of people on the ferry we managed to get good seats where we could see the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan. If you stand in the back (in either direction) there aren't as many people and you can take photos without a lot of people being in the way.

This was a fun experience. You should load the boat on the right side to Staten Island if you want views of the Statue of Liberty. There's nothing to do on Staten Island so you pretty much just come back after. Plan for about two hours.
