We do not live in New York City, but this is one of our favorite, never crowded museums. Its collections and exhibits are eclectic and not limited to New York history. For instance, this institution owns, and periodically displays, Audubon’s original bird paintings from which copper plates, and then under 200 “original” prints (of each painting), were made in the... This is one place that can really whet one's appetite for antique collection. You want it, they got it! Seeing the toy train and other toy collections is enough to trigger memories of happy childhood days. It would also make one beat oneself up for throwing away stuff that is potentially a collectible! On a more serious note, its ongoing... More

This museum is well laid out and is a good way to learn about New York. There are changing exhibits which are often very interesting, but the permanent exhibits are very good as well. There are lectures and movies which are good as well. It is not crowded so you can really enjoy what you are seeing.

I do not especially care for the permanent collection here. The new restaurant is fairly upscale and pricey. But sometimes temporary exhibits are first rate and often speakers are first rate. This is literally across 77th St. fromt he Museum of Natural History so that makes a nice combo visit.

This place has an amazing collection of items relating to the history of the city, and some other oddments. In May, we saw Tiffany lamps, early model trains, paintings, films and there was even an excellent cafe. The library was closed and I understand that in view of several thefts, it is under some surveillance. But what was the problem... More

In a city with several of the finest museums in the world, this one is often overlooked. The cab driver taking us here, a history buff, had never been inside. The more people we spoke to, the more ignored this place seemed to be. We came for the Audubon exhibit (sensational) and stayed for hours, going from exhibit to exhibit.... More

The New York Historical Society at West 77th St. and Central Park west is across the street from The Museum of Natural History. It is a small museum with wonderful information about New York history going back to the Dutch. An added attraction are the wonderful Audubon paintings of birds which every bird lover will want to see. Storico, the delicious... More

Great museum to visit that is overshadowed by the much larger American Museum of Natural History next door. The facilities are beautiful after its recent renovation. There is even a little iPhone app that has some introductory videos - helpful but somewhat limited. Also, don't forget to pick up the free audio guides that accompany some of the exhibits. They...
