We went early morning and saw one bear, one hawk, one deer, three + heron, too many turtles to count, butterflies, moths, horse flies and a few beautiful birds that we don't know the species of. We went back in the evening and saw TWO more bear - different sizes so we know it wasn't the same one from the... More

We have been to this place well more than a couple of times, and have to say - it's not meant for walking. Sure, there is a trail, wheelchair accessible even, about half a mile, but all you gonna see there is bear crap. Depending on the diet it could be quite colorful, but that's about it. Driving around helps, as... More

Drive around the dirt roads at dusk or dawn and you will not be disappointed. With the highest concentration of black bears on the east coast you know you will see some. I just have to share a few of my pictures. All total we saw around 25 bears.

My wife & I put wildlife refuges at the top of our list when we tour. I'm reluctant to give any refuge a negative review, but I can't agree with the other reviewers. Still, our reaction is so much different from the others that I must say it might be us. Still????? We visited on Sunday, 10/14/12 and went to... More

as it often is in this area. Well marked & maintained water trails, a very nice launch. Black bear and alligators were spotted in the lake the day I was there.

This was a fantastic place to see wildlife. I saw a bear at the edge of the woods. The bear just looked at me as if he was modeling for the photo op. The bear shook his head as if to say that is enough time to take your photo. The photo op was truly funny as my eyes were... More

We read that there was good chance at seeing bears at dawn and dusk, so we decided to make the trek over to this park early one evening in May. At first it seemed like it was just going to be a wild goose chase. We saw a bunch of neat birds and a turtle crossing the road. Then we... More

With friends, I attended 2 outings at ARNWR; A Black Bear tour and Red Wolf Howling. Our caravan of personal vehicles followed the guides through the refuge. We spotted 3+ black bears then returned to the entrance to listen to ARNWR representatives give an informative talk about the Red Wolf program. Our caravan followed the Refuge guides about 2-3 miles... More

While we were vacationing in Nags Head, we decided to take a drive one morning to see if we could view some wildlife. It did not disappoint! Not only was the Alligator River NWR closer than I thought (about 20 minutes from south Nags Head), but we saw numerous black bears. The first morning we saw six bears, and the... More

Hear the critically endangered red wolf howl and learn about how this refuge is studying the red wolf population and releasing them back into the wild with the US Fish and Wildlife services. Make sure to wear your bug repellant.
