This was a really interesting fort to visit. The staff were friendly when we arrived, but it could have benefitted from more guide interaction around the fort to answer questions etc. Pre-video was really good. Amazing to think that they had ice even in the midst of summer without the aid of a freezer!

For a long while in the 1830's, Bent's Old Fort (there was a short-lived "new" fort afterwards) was the only so-called "civilization" between Independence, MO and Santa Fe, NM. It served as a magnet for Native Americans, Mountain Men, and commercial traders on the Santa Fe Trail.
