If you're into caves, this one is really interesting. It has lots of archeological features, and is just fun to crawl through. Don't do the Lighted Trail Tour, the drive is longer than the tour itself. Do one of the extended tours so you really get a feel for the cave and learn its features. More

We might have been the only tourist there that day, and the 1/2h guided tour turned into a 2 h passionate tour and lesson of geology. We learnt so much that day about volcanoes that it remained a highlight of our week on the island of Hawaii. A big thank you to our tour guide. Note that you need to... More

Best with young and energetic family members. We have exhausted most beach activities but have young children that cannot do activities that have a minimum of 14yr age requirement. But in the end it was the adults that have all the fun. 1st time caving, they provide the equipment and gears and water too. Plus, we were the only ones... More

We had a great time at Kula Kai Caverns today. We did the extended cave tour, lasting about 2 hours, and did ladder climbs & crawling. We wore helmets & head lamps, as there is not any light once you get deep into the cave. My 2 children, ages 9 & 13, thoroughly loved it. Our guide, Kathlyn, was very... More

We took the lighted trail tour and it was wonderful. The guide is very friendly and spent a lot of time with us. She gave us a lot of background information about the area and also a lot of geological information. Not a lot of tourists (actually the tour was only two of us). Must book ahead as they need... We went on the short, lighted hike and it was a lot of fun. The guide was really friendly, as were the two dogs that joined us on our trip. It's a little off the beaten path (you have to call and make a reservation), but well worth the trip if you're exploring the southern tip of the island or... More

If you are staying in the Kailua-Kona area it will take about 1 - 1 1/2 hours to make it down to this lightly traveled gem. If you are making the Black Sand Beach and Volcano National Park (VNP) run for the day it makes for a great diversion along the way. The private owners of this lava tube have... More

This was more interesting than what I imagined, and both kids (ages 16 and 9) really enjoyed it. You have to call in advance, because it's a private attraction. But well worth the planning. The guide was knowledgeable and spent a lot of time with us. She accommodated the different abilities of the kids and offered terrain options. She was... More
