I hope this is the correct page to review the hike with David Ewing. The hike begins at his home, built on the lava! We had Stacy as our guide the evening we went and on the hike out she shared interesting facts about the lava and the volcano. The hike over the old lava is not an easy one.... More

This review is for the trail leading to the base of the source of the current lava flow - Pu'u O'o crater/vent. It's called Captain's Trail, and it is one of the top adventures detailed in the Big Island Revealed book, as well as the review below in January 2013. First off, the trail is officially closed by the County/State... More

What an experience, walking in the middle of a crator, seeing the masses of lava everywhere around. Some areas have smoke coming out from below. Wanderful reminder that this baby is still cooking below our feet.

Let me start with "Stay Away From This Hike". I can't stress enough on how dangerous it is and on how lucky these people were. I've hiked there about 100 times give or take. I know it well. There are so many things that could have gone terribly wrong. First and foremost the vent overflowed in a big way right... More

We met David at his house, which is built on the lava. Wild!!!! We had a guide named Sklyer, a very nice young man. They gave us walking sticks for our hike out to the lava, about 2.5 miles. He set us up by the shoreline to see the lava flow into the water, which was amazing during the light.... More

Hiking over lava, then into an oasis of tropical plants and native birds, then out again into a meadow, back into a woods. Very different air temps and humidity levels. Great views of Mauna Kea.

This was far and away one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life. We were fortunate in terms of timing: the lava was flowing into the sea that day, and the winds were blowing to keep us cool, and the sulphur smell away. You meet David at his house, which is an experience in itself: he lives ON the... More

First off, I requested that TripAdvisor set up a separate listing for the Pu'u O'o vent and they refused, so we will just have to continue mixing up the Pu'u O'o Trail and the Vent, whatever, to people in the Mainland they all sound the same anyway. This is a review of the VENT. The trail is much as described... More

This was the most amazing thing we have done in Hawaii - we saw several species of birds on the brink of extinction in the most wonderful Hakalau Forest.
