On a rainy day it is worth the visit. There is so much to see in Hilo area that I would only go if you are there for a while. Staff are very friendly and welcoming.

The last time I was there was in 1986. Since then, it has turned into a great museum, and even has a research room for teachers. The original house still stands, and the entrance fee is reasonable. Good way to spend two hours.

Customer service here was excellent. With 2 adults & 6 children the family entry price of $21 was welcomed. There are only 2 tours of the mission house daily so make sure you get there early to secure your tour as numbers on tours are limited. In our case, we actually investigated the day prior and booked our tour for... More

Museum consist of two collections and an historic house. The collections focus on natural and cultural history. Both were fabulous and well worth the visit. We also took in the guided tour of the Lyman House which was interesting in its own right. All in all we really enjoyed the visit. Minimum 2 1/2 hours to visit.

This struck me as a museum secure in its endowment, interesting but somewhat unfocused. The main historical aspect of Hawaiian history was well done but whole sections were devoted to subjects nowhere near or about Hawaii – Japanese artifacts and pictures from an Asian cyclone, for example. The museum is a healthy uphill walk from the seafront and not inexpensive,... More

The museum has an outstanding collection of minerals, which was displayed beautifully. I enjoyed a special photography exhibit as well as the permanent collection about Hawaii's emigration.

We visited with our 10 year old daughter while in Hilo. The family rate is only $21.00, but as there was only 20 minutes left before it closed, we were let in by donation. This is a great museum if you are interested in natural history and geology. My daughter LOVES rocks and found the first floor particularly fascinating. My... More

Interesting displays, but the highlight was the guided tour of the house. Great volcano and wildlife displays for kids.

Contains a lot of local history related to the Lyman family. There is a guided tour available which takes you through the nearby Lyman house(house can only be accessed via guided tour). The rest of the museum has a great variety of local historical info as well as general info on a number of subjects. Good way to spend 3... More

When we visited the museum, my daughter had forgotten her student ID so we had to pay the full $10 adult price for her ticket, in addition to other adults in our party. AFTER buying the tickets the cashier informed us that part of the exhibit was in fact closed PLUS we would not be able to visit the historic... More
