We took the detour to see Newspaper Rock when driving from Moab to Monument Valley and it is well worth the stop. The drive to the site is scenic, and on the day we visited we mostly had the road to ourselves. The site was also uncrowded and quiet. More

Can't miss this as you drive on the long road to the entrance to Canyonlands Needle's NP. The panel is big and you can pick out lots of styles of petroglyphs More

This is small but mind blowing - that there are such ancient paintings like this was amazing. A great way to introduce our kids to a much bigger and longer history than they get at school (we made a timeline on the ground putting us & the rock into perspective - really helpful). The campground was basic but worked for... More

Single large panel of Fremont and Anasazi style petroglyphs with anthropomorphic and geometric designs. Historic Ute petroglyphs and some names of early day cowboys. In summer there is often a Native American jewelry artist with a sales table. BLM pit toilet nearby. More

If you are heading to the Needles portion of Canyonlands or are passing by on route 191 to/from Moab, this one is high value-added. Easy stop, no walking, can get within a few feet of hundreds of petroglyphs. More

Newspaper Rock State Historic Monument, which is one of the largest and best-known petroglyph panels in Utah, is located about 19 km (12 miles) west of U.S. Highway 191 between Monticello and Moab on the paved State Route 211 that leads to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. Only a few steps from the road there is a rock... More

We have visited some of the Indian pettroglyphs elsewhere and find this one to be at the top of must see sites. It is loaded with examples of artwork that is clear and easy to view. The contrast of the rock's patina allows for excellent photographs in mid day sunlight. The rock surface measures about 30' long by 20 feet... More

If you are planning a visit to Canyonlands or Arches and are driving from Monument Valley or Mesa Verde, by all means take an hour and stop by Newspaper Rock, approx. 10 miles off Hwy 211 en route to the Needles Section of Canyonlands. It is one of the finest examples of Indian rock art in the US. Dates back... More
