The museum's collection comprises various trains/cabs, memorabilia, historical photographs, and model train sets, housed in the former railroad passenger terminal.
Another place to go back in history! This is a wonderful place to pretend you are in charge of a railroad, drive a train, search through all of the cubby holes, and discuss history with your children! Railroads are very important to all of us!
Nice, but it didn't seem like enough of the cars were restored and open for viewing. What we saw was O.K. but for the money, I have to say I expected more.
I never knew there was a train museum in Galveston. All the kids enjoyed it...so much fun to check out the trains first hand and the depot musuem was so interesting. Love the white sculptures.
The Ghosts are life size white figurines of passengers from the 20's, 30's lounging in the waiting room. In the back railway yard you can explore the old trains. During season, there is a train ride available.
I was amazed at how much they have accomplished in their clean up after Hurricane Ike. The museum is a wonderful place to visit. We really enjoyed being able to go on the cars in the yard.
Whilst the trains and carriages are the proper subject of the museum, the building itself is a stunning Art Deco building, with period detailing. A trip highlight.
They have an extensive collection of rail cars but many are closed, apparently, still suffering damage from the hurricane. Really liked the collection of railroad china. The cabooses were good but needed more restoration.
If you are even slightly interested in railroad history, all aboard the Galveston Island Railroad Museum and Terminal. Very well done especially the living history of the railway passenger ghosts in the terminal. If you can arrange a visit on a Saturday, make sure you take a ride on the Harborside Express. An authentic touch to a wonderful visit.
