Wasn't sure what to expect when we went to this Museum but it was wonderful. The man running it was so knowledgeable and so helpful. The story of Wounded Knee is heartbreaking and makes you ashamed of how the soldiers and settlers acted. More

This is the true story of how the west was shaped. The Wounded Knee site is a powerful place in American history. It might be a bit out of the way but worth it. Make sure you bring cash to support local artists and don't forget to ask questions. The last time I was here the park management (the local... More

In our travels through South Dakota, there are many Native themes at the same time Native people don't seem to be well respected. The Wounded Knee Museum tells the story of The Wounded Knee Massacre from a Native perspective. It details how the white settler's and soldier's fears of a beaten and abused Native people led to a massacre that... More

This museum takes one through the history of the Indian people in the Americas from the time the Europeans arrived to the present. It is well organized and there is a lot of reading to do if one is really interested in Indian history. Soft music is playing continually. Of course, much of it deals with the massacre of Lakota... A small, compact and impactful museum asking nothing more from you than to absorb the horrific treatment our Native Americans endured as others took over their homelands. Agree or disagree with the accounting do visit this museum as it has a critical message to convey. More

What a pleasant surprise! Thoroughly documents the events and timeline leading to the massacre. Displays are easy to see and understand and are full of information. This museum is a jewel. More

The museum building is dreary from the outside and situated next to a motel nearly at the I-90 exit ramps. At first you might think it is another place selling tourist stuff. There is so much display material inside that a space twice the size could be easily filled but don't be put off by the cluttered nature of the... More

The "tacky" facade of this "museum" with its I-90 backdrop belies the meaningful story within! We almost did not even go in. But we came out with another perspective on how the West was won or stolen? The nominal $5 entrance fee provides a sobering set of text displays and artifacts to gain insights about the US frontier history leading... More

I am a history teacher, and I enjoy learning about American Indian culture. Thus, I was very excited to go to the museum. However, the museum was small, crowded, and had few artifacts or interactive displays/exhibits. Most of the museum was text, printed on faux buffalo hides. There was an enormous amount of text to read, and most of the... More
