I ride my bike on the trail all the time. Not too crowded either. If you go early enough you'll see the geese walking along the shore. More

Pittsburgh offers 17 miles of paved bike/walking/running trails along its 3 rivers. There is easy access from the North Side and South Side ( http://www.friendsoftheriverfront.org/files/heritage_trail.html), and biking or walking the trail allows one to really appreciate what a beautiful and unique city Pittsburgh is.
