When visiting Lancaster County make certain to visit the home of the 15th President of the United States James Buchanan. Wheatland is visited by few, but deserves more attention. The adjacent historical society building for Lancaster County is beautiful as well and has a great gift shop. It's an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours while in Pennsylvania...

James Buchanan, our 15th President, is little remembered and even less understood. The docent, dressed in the costume of his time (pre Civil War), explained his personal life in context with history and the home he loved. Buchanan preceded Lincoln's presidency. He was America's only bachelor president; his niece served as 'First Lady' during his term in Washington. The home...

With beautifully restored interiors, based faithfully in part on drawings from Buchanan’s residency, the President’s home is worth the visit. The modern visitor hall, separate from the home, is clean and filled with light. The tour guide is enthusiastic, and packs a lot of information into the hour tour. If you don’t time your tour right (they run every hour...

The tour of the...

Very nice place to visit. Tours are interesting, especially if you have a good tour guide (we did). Our guide was friendly and informative. Shared a lot of information about President Buchanan and history. The house is lovely, especially at Christmas. Recommend for adults and families with older children.

We didnt just learn about president Buchanan but also about his family and also a lot about american history in general. The house itself is very nice also, but the guide made the...

We started our tour with a brief movie in the gate house/gift shop. A short walk down a path led to Buchanan's home. We were greeted at the door by our tour guide dressed in period clothing. I don't remember her name but she was very pleasant and knowledgable and open to questions. The most interesting thing I learned was...

We found out a wealth of info on our 15th President of the USA --most of which we had never known before. We found out that his neice served as his First Lady (the name was coined after her-- for the first time ever) and about his nephews and about how he supported his family.
