Harrisburg is the state capital of Pennsylvania with a large quantity of activities for the whole family. There are museums - Whitaker Center, State Museum, State Archives; restaurants - Restaurant Row on 2nd Street, Strawberry Square's food court, Firehouse; and a great waterfront. Across from Harrisburg, in the middle of the Susquehanna River is City Island, home of the Harrisburg... More

We parked our car 4 blocks away from Market street and walked across the bridge to take in the weather. Ended up on City Island and enjoyed the view of the city riverfront before walking back across the pedestrian bridge. Continued our walk along Front St to observe the architecture of all the older buildings. Decent walk during the daytime... More

Visit was worthwhile. But I would have to say, once and done ! When you've seen Chocolate World which is why you go to Hershey, you have pretty much seen it all. City of Harrisburg was not all that. Location of hotel to airport was very conveinent, and the Holiday Inn Express on Union Deposit Road was very clean, the... More

Ok Truth fans, what can I say very cute, nice eatery's, shops, clean, been here twice now once in the Summer & once @ Easter. Please know at Easter Sunday pretty much everything is closed and it's like a ghost town apart from the odd wafe & stray who seemed harmless.

Start somewhere north of City Island and walk doww river. Walk across the old bridge to City Island and spend a hour or so there walking around the perimeter (or take the train ride around - I do both) If you have the time, take the paddlewheeler for a short trip up the river. After leaving the island, continue walking... More

It is too bad that Harrisburg has become such a scary place! For a number of years, there had been a wonderful revitalization going on which resulted in some fantastic restaurants and night spots. However, in recent years crime has escalated and you have to be afraid to be in downtown Harrisburg, even though the restaurants are still trying to... More

It's a real shame since Harrisburg is the capital of PA ~ there are plenty of great restaurants and bars downtown, but it simply is not safe any time of the day. If you do venture there, please travel in groups.

Downtown is a traffic nightmare (poorly managed roads) and the crime rate is horrible. I do not feel safe walking aorund the city unarmed.

In general, for a state capital, it's underwhelming. However, there are a few gems, like a brisk morning walk along the river, dinner at Suba (above Mangia Qui), or spending the night at the quaint City House B&B for a quiet and uninterrupted night.

It is just too bad that downtown Harrisburg is such an un-safe and scary place because there are many good places and events that we could enjoy. From Hot Tuna-- to Keb Mo- to TTB- to good restaurants and night life there is a lot to enjoy but we are scared every time we go.
