PAM is really Portland's only art museum. It has some interesting exhibits, but few noteworthy pieces. My favorite is Karl Huber's "Early Morning" -- a really marvelous piece. Otherwise, there aren't that many pieces of interest here, certainly nothing world-class; yet the admission price is steep, and if there's any kind of special exhibit, you really have to pay up....

Big, extensive, historic, great collections, interesting gift shop. One of the best museums I've seen on the west coast.

The room featuring art of Paris and New York thoughtfully combines two groups of work usually exhibited separately. It's a bright, beautiful collection and the guard was unusually helpful. The display of Asian religious art, too, combines works usually shown in individual spaces, and features some truly inspiring and lovely work.

Special exhibits included 5 Monets (most from a private collection & which I had never before seen) which joined Renoirs,...

We went for the Rothko retrospective. Couldn't have been better. Not over-crowded, art well presented, most patrons knew museum etiquette. The permanent collection is also wroth-while, thought after all that Rothko we were kind of burnt out. Don't miss this!

I always enjoy the Portland Art Museum but am never THRILLED with it. It pales in comparison with great museums (New York, Paris, Rome, etc.) but it has enough solid pieces to make it worth a visit.
