The waterfalls here are very impressive. Several of them seem to be 100 feet tall or more. The volume of water flowing from the river is pretty big as well, compared to other falls in the area. I understand that you can bushwack down the Horsepasture to see even more falls.

The new parking area is very nice, but if you went there years ago, its a little confusing. Most of the maps in the area have the waterfall names in the wrong order, but its not hard to figure them out when you see them. This is not a hike for beginners or those with low stamina, this is rated...

My husband and I took our nine and twelve year old children on this hike. It was amazing! I must say that it was a little more than we had bargained for, considering we had to cross two large streams and the hike covered both state park and national forest lands.

The Waterfall book mentioned in another review is great to have when visiting the area. Everything is laid out for you in the book and each waterfall is listed in order. It tells you the length of hikes which very helpful if you have small kids or older adults that don't want to walk very far to see the falls.

Being a waterfall fanatic, I've been to the Horsepasture river many times. This last visit was my first since access was changed from roadside to Gorges State Park and Drift Falls is no longer accessible. A friend, myself and my two small dogs set out early on Monday morning. The access point in Gorges is nice even though construction continues...

After breakfast on our last day we headed to The Horse pasture falls. They consist of Turtleback Falls, Rainbow Falls and Drift Falls. Our favorite falls of the whole Highlands/Cashiers trip was Rainbow Falls, it is 150 feet high and you can descend to the base and climb to the top and sit on the rocks as the water surges...

This is truly a beautiful area, and if you're able and within driving distance, you simply have to go. There are five waterfalls clustered together along roughly a 2 - 2.5 mile stretch of the river, which runs through Nantahala National Forest. Day parking is available at nearby Gorges State Park ("GSP") along NC 281. The hiking can be difficult...
