I found out that we would be in the area of the Oak Island lighthouse too late. I was disappointed to see that you have to set up tours two weeks in advance with NO EXCEPTIONS. I realize that it is done by volunteers but two weeks?
We went to see the lighthouse anyway, even though we couldn't go in....

Unless you know you want to go to the top (recommended by tourist center to make reservation 2 weeks ahead) way ahead of time, the only thing you see is the outside. Tours of the bottom section are only open between 10 and 2. Not much parking. As much as I love lighthouses, I just drove by this one.

Not as picturesque as the other NC Lighthouses but still worth seeing. This one was built in 1958. You can make reservations to take a tour inside the light from Sept. to May. Check out www.oakislandlighthouse.org for details. There is a boardwalk across the street to look out at the ocean also. The Coast Guard Station is next door.

On the list, its a lighthouse just does not carry the appeal of the "others" on our coast. Check the box that you have seen it as you drive by headed to the others.

Enjoyed the scenic drive to the lighthouse, also the walkway across from it to view and photgraph various flora and fauna of the dunes, etc. We did not do the tour, but nonetheless spent an abundance of time photographing the area and the lighthouse.

My husband and I enjoyed our tour of the Oak Island lighthouse. We had a very informative tour from our enthusiastic guide, Kathleen. The views were astounding!!! The lighthouse tour is a must when on Oak Island!

Nice lighthouse, tours are given, but you have to schedule ahead of time, which we did not know. :( The lighthouse is located in a nice area and it is being taken care of well.

Be sure to call ahead so as to be able to walk to the top. The photo op from the top is fantastic!!! It is located right next to an active Coast Guard Search and Rescue station and if you go on a wednesday (from May thru Aug) you can take a tour of the station and get on one...

Just climbed the Oak Island Light House for the second time last week. You climb 8 ( I think ) sets of ship ladders to the top which is quite a hike. The climb is not for the weak! The view from the top of the lighthouse is awesome and the volunteers give you a great amount of history of...
