To get to Max Patch, you have to take dirt and gravel roads that will get your car VERY dirty. Once you reach it, though, it is a fairly short climb to the top of a grassy mountain where you can see for miles. People bring blankets to picnic there as well as frisbees and dogs. This place is accessible... More

I shouldn't tell everyone about this place...but gosh I love it there! Everytime I go its different. Its like being on top of the world. Like in the sound of music. Excellent views....beautiful place in the fall, clouds laying low in the valleys. Nice place to go to cool off in the summer. Weather can change quickly there. I like... More

The path on the left is not as direct, but makes for an easier trip down the mountain. The views at the summit are spectacular and not to be missed! More

A lovely stroll to a fabulous view! No hiking required. Just walk up, take in the 360 degree view and walk back to the car. If you are an avid hiker, you will find plenty of trails, including the AT. More

Get above the world here for a great view, not too crowded, and interesting road to this area. Hike around the rim is about 1 mi. More

Great 2 mile hike. From parking lot go on left trail around mtn & then walk straight down vs. straight uphill hike. Parking is in short supply at peak fall weekend so be patient & relax! Lots of folks with dogs. 360 degree view. May be very windy as you would expect an open hill at the top of the... More

Difficult access, especially from the Hot Springs side, which means there are very few people here. The most beautiful part of Pisgah from what I have seen. More

Our first trip to Max Patch Bald was around 1985 for a Mother's Day picnic. We felt as if transported to Austria or the Scottish/Irish highlands-USA version with views taking in the Cumberland Mtns. of Tennessee, all the way to Mt LeConte in the Great Smokies, Cold Mountain along the Blueridge Parkway to Mt. Mitchell-highest mountain east of the Mississippi... More

We spent a week at a cabin about 1 mile from Max Patch Bald. Hiking to the top of the bald was fun (although tiring), and the 360 degree views at the top were spectacular. The road to the bald is unpaved, but hard packed and not difficult to drive in good weather - don't give up as you travel... More

We hired Smoky Mtn Llama Treks who offer gorgeous pack llamas to hike with you and carry all our food and stuff! They were friendly, easy to lead and it made our trip so fun! The views were incredible, and the flowers and deer made it seem like we were walking through a calender photo. Its well worth the drive... More
