The stromatolites themselves are quite underwhelming but the wooden walkway over both the stromatalies and the shallow waters of Hamelin Pool make the stop worthwhile. The Stromatalites are only a couple of kms off the main road to Denham and Monkey Mia so it is a worthwhile stop to breakup the journey. Tea and coffee is also available at the... More

If you don't know the history of stromatolites then do some research, or better yet, come to Shark Bay and see for yourself. The Hamelin Pool is a rarity on the planet. The stromatolites the oldest living organisms. Without them there would be no you or me... it is very much worth the trip to see them. Great boardwalk over... More

We visited at low tide where these primitive life forms were more visible. The boardwalk over the water meant we had a good view from above. Very much enjoyed the interpretation boards describing what the stromatolites are with a degree of humour, for example - " I'm stumpy the sttromatolite, come along and meet the family." If you are interested... More

We left Denham en-route to Carnarvon, and had every intention of visiting the Stromatolites on the way. We had our eski filled with ice, food and drink so we were prepared for a hot day as the early morning temps were already 28 deg celsius. We arrived at Hamelin Pool by 1030am, the outside temp was 33 deg C, we... More

The day we visited was over 40 degrees and the flies unbearable - As a consequence we were recommended to take the short walk to the pool and jetty - Was very interesting. On the return trip it was a little cooler (mid 30's) so we took the short side trip again to do the longer walk and look at... More

Easy access [some steps] through the shell quarry to a boadwalk where you can walk out over the water to see these ancient creatures. Excellent signage explains all about them. Check tide times before your visit to get the best sightings though as the water is shallow it's not a wipe out if you get the timing wrong. More
