4.000 years ago, Santorini had a big civilization, in Akrotiri. People had boats to travel in all mediteraneo... After the explosion , everything covered by lava... but now, we have in this museum everything they found there.. even affrescos.. PLEASE visit this museum !!!

It is surely a great museum and if the people who work at it would care a bit it could be the best. But it is not a sign of interest in their work, that burned lamps at important vitrines are still - after one year - out of order!

I really enjoyed the exhibits in this museum. I visited the archeological site of Akrotiri the day before, and this completed the experience. Many of the artifacts recovered from the site are now housed here. The museum was free on Friday when we attended, so check ahead and see if they still offer a day with free admission. This museum has a lot of the items recovered from Akoteri, and the displays are excellent. The original excavation site has been stripped with much of it going to this museum or to Athens.

The museum has very good descriptions of the finds in English. We visited after going to the site and as Ancient Thira has no guides, it made the experience far more enjoyable.

very interesting, it can be related to the minoens in Crete. Hire a guide or buy a tour if you really want to understand this place.
