The on off water taxi is an amazing way to see different areas of New York, we used this to visit the 9/11 Memorial site and saw a few other areas on the way, you could actually spend all day getting on and off at different stops, however it wasn't a very nice day weather wise so we didn't use... Took a water taxi across to Jersey one lovely spring afternoon with friends. So much more comfortable and relaxing than taking a train, a but or, heavens forbid, driving! When we got to the Jersey side, we walked around, had a cup of coffee and waited for the return trip, equally relaxing.

Generally a bit crowded, though a good idea for those stuck in the city in the summer months. There are a few locations in the city (South Street Seaport, Governor’s Island, etc.). Overpriced food (that you'll wait in line 30 minutes for) coupled with events (concerts, etc.), give it a go.

Try Governors Island location instead. It was ideal for families with kids. They were playing in the sand while you enjoy the gorgeous Manhattan views and drinks.
