After many years of weekend trips to the northshore, I've covered almost every portion of the trail. A year ago, we took the final step and purchased a cabin in Lutsen. Now the trail is always within a short drive. Ultimate favorite hike is from Caribou trail to Lutsen ski hill passing the gem of a lake Agnes, high on... More

The SHT is a great path for an unspoiled hike. The trail is well-maintained in some areas (nearest parks and rest stops) and very rugged in other areas. Be sure to wear your most broken-in and favorite hiking shoes! The trail is so long it offers many different "attractions." The SHT crosses many rivers (many with breathtaking falls), streams, slot... More

Rocky knobs, deep rushing rivers in slot canyons, open forests, views of the Inland Sea, it has it all! Some of the trails are VERY rugged. Consult guidebooks before choosing your trail. There is a great variety of sections on the SHT and you want to be prepared. More

I stayed in Lutzen last fall and hiked a portion of the trail. It was well marked and had amazing views of fall foliage. Well cared for by the society (s) which care for it. More

lots of trails, some areas are a good work out-some a nice leisurely walk, wilderness at its best, breathtaking views along the way, takes you into multiple state parks, biking is possible also, just remember that you have to hike back to where you started, when the sun goes down it can be pitch black More

The main office of Superior Hiking Trail in Two Harbors can furnish many vital maps but even without a map it is easy to hit the trail for a great hike of whatever duration you wish to experience. This is a volunteer created trail and the upkeep is also well done. Many of the trail segments have unique views as... More

Did what's called the split rock loop.....saw the split rock. A very nice hike. you basically walk around the rim of a river gorge ..... the split rock is cool...but not really a destination. The destination is the whole hike.. different nice views of river around every corner. Enjoyable. Plan on about 3 1/2 hours for the whole loop. Hiking... More

This is a long trail, we've only explored small parts on day-trips. There are amazing views, but you have to work for it in most parts. On one hike with our young teens, we went to Bean and Bear Lakes near Silver Bay. This was recommended by a co-lodger for the beauty and proximity. It was very hot up in... More

My wife and I did a two week tour of several cities in Minnesota, including Grand Marais, Duluth & Hibbing. We were up there to escape the Florida heat and didn't really know what we were going to do, but turned out to have a really great vacation. Please see my other posts regarding lodging, meals, etc. if you are... More

In the mid-1980s this long distance hiking trail was conceived and modeled after the Appalachian Trail of the Atlantic Coast. The Superior Hiking Trail is located along the ridgeline from Two Harbors to the Canadian border, over 200 miles of spectacular views of northern hardwood and boreal forest, raptor and wader and warbler and woodland birds, brooks and waterfalls, the...
