My husband and I took our teen son to this location as it was somewhere I had always wanted to visit. We drove over from Sault Ste. Marie (hour and half) and I'm glad we did. The drive was lovely and uncomplicated. The museum was interesting and poignant. I appreciated seeing the Edmund Fitzgerald bell. My favorite part was the... More

Reading some of the reviews we were a little hesitant to make the 2 hour drive from grand marais. So glad we made the trip. If you have any interest in shipwrecks it's a must visit. We spent about 3 1/2 hours there. We toured the lightkeepers house and the guide was great. She was very informed and passionate in... More

Beautifully restored buildings on the grounds of the Coast Guard Lifesaving Station where many shipwrecks occurred near Whitefish Bay. The most famous was the Edmund Fitzgerald (remember the Gordon Lightfoot song). The bell of the "Big Fitz" is on display, plus the video of its recovery in 1995 (big spread in National Geographic that year). There is an annual ceremony... More

If you have ever heard Gordon Lightfoot's song about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald this will interest you. The museum contains stories and photos of the Lake Superior ship graveyard. If you plan well in advance, you can stay the night in renovated crew quarters. More

a little pricy to ge in ($13, I think for adults) but nice displays of most (or all?) shipwrecks on Lake Superior, esp. the Edmond Fitzgerald. nice gift store too. I did not see thelighthouse itself and it was cold and very rainy! More

I don't know if the building housing the Shipwreck Museum was ever a chapel, but visitors touring the nicely detailed displays, just might feel an undeniable spiritual presence in the main gallery. There is no lightness or brightness in the stories told here. All are tragedies. Some truly horrendous. Its history of pioneer mariners facing daunting challenges and the unseen... More

This is a small but nicely done museum. The old lighthouse is nice too. It is a bit expensive, $13 for adults, considering we were there less than an hour. It is also a bit out of the way. Be careful as you are so close to Canada your cell phone might pick up a Canadian tower. There is a... More
