I just returned from a weeklong silent retreat. The Abbey of Gethsemani is the oldest Trappist monastery in the US, founded in 1848. The monks belong to the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance. They make vows of silence, poverty, obedience, and work. They Abbey generates revenue from their sales of fruitcake, cheese, and fudge. It is an incredibly spiritual... More

I just returned from a weekend retreat at the Abbey. It is beautiful, serene, and quiet. Talking is not allowed in the buildings (except for designated areas like the lobby) or the gardens. Retreatants are allowed access to special gardens and the buildings where casual visitors are not. I can't recommend this experience enough. In the silence you can truly... More

The Abbey is not only lovely and a wonderful place to just sit and reflect, but the gift shop is very nice and sells the cheese made by the monks. Definitelty worth a visit. More

Very interesting place to visit. As you walk the grounds, there is a stillness in the air which seems to have a calming effect. More

Love hearing the monks chant and sing.... Great place to be quiet and still. They offer silent retreats if you register ahead. I did one while healing from a life changing motorcycle accident. Helped me find direction. More

The Abbey is located on a beautiful 2,000 acre haven in Nelson County. The Abbey is surrounded by mountains and rolling hills is every direction and is truly beautiful. You can participate in daily prayer services and also stay on the grounds for a retreat. Make sure to watch the video in the visitor's center to get a glimpse into... More

I spent a four-day weekend in silent retreat at the Abbey of Gethsemani. I had a nice single room, three meals a day plus snacks, and 1200 acres of gorgeous land on which to spend time with mysef. It was perfect. Book four months in advance. There is no actual cost, but donations are appreciated. There are seven worship services... More

We visited the Abbey while in Kentucky, and were very glad we did. It is a beautiful Abbey in a lovely peaceful setting, and just a brief visit helps re-charge the batteries. We explored the grounds and visited the excellent gift shop, and stayed to visit the Church during one of the the daily Offices prayed by the Monks. This... More

We stopped here on a rainy afternoon and had a delightful visit. Went to the Chapel but missed the evensong.. Love the Bourbon Fudge made by the monks and sold in the gift shop. All our friends will be receiving this for Christmas this year! More
