I did not expect the scale of museum that we found once there. We had intentions to visit portal 31, but it was closed. Since you pass right by the museum, we felt it worth the stop and I will say its was worth the time. It could easily be several hours taking in the displays, experiencing the simulated mine... More

Just by stepping in the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum one adds an honor. I felt totally swept by surprise to see what a coal miners life looked like in general. We (EPGers) observed the tools used for coal mining, their dinning room, kitchen and their office. This museum had three floors with a basement. What I understood from this museum... More

The Kentucky Coal Museum is a fabulous place that reserves the history of the mine and tells stories of some of the people whose lives were coal mining. It has many tools that were used for mining and antiques that once belonged to mining families. The museum also has some notes that were written by miners a few minutes before... More

First of all, looking from outside, the building seems small that I thought it cannot totally portray the whole picture of Coal Mine by displaying all the necessities relating with Coal Mine. After peeking inside, I realized that I was absolutely wrong. It has three stories with basement for displaying. I am really amazed to witness the checks of Coal... More

I have been to several eastern KY coal towns including, Neon-Fleming, Wheelwright, Jackson, Seco, Jenkins, and McRoberts. The living historical heritage in the four level s of this museum in Harlan County is well worth a stop. The lifestyle for a coal miner and his family and the relationship this community had with International Harvester up until 1963 is evident... More

If one is willing to stop and read then study what you're seeing this is a great place to visit. I did all of the above and realized that this was just the tip of the iceberg. There are four floors to explore and each is well worth the time it takes to see the displays. This visit gave me... More
