There are so many great shops, including MIddle Eastern ones! I have gone there several times and the restaurants and book stores are great.
Chicago is, like most urban areas, a multi-cultural big city. Over the years many of its neighborhoods were home to immigrants from various parts of the world. In the late 1800's a area on the near North side of Chicago attracted many of those immigrants from Sweden. This area is called Andersonville.

The Crepes restaurant on the corner of Foster and Clark s a must spot to eat. And Justin at the Barber Shop a half block West gives a terrific hot shave. The area has too many eclectic spots to mention, but stop in at the Brown Elephant for slightly used clothing and furniture. This is a great resale shop.
You must give this neighborhood a walk through. Plan to take your time to sample the little Swedish restaurants (especially for breakfast) and visit the shops. Almost a little step back in time.

Years ago we every week dined in a Peruvian restaurant. Did not do much else except buy food in a deli occasionally.
I've lived in Edgewater for the last 12 years, which is just north of Andersonville (walking distance for most).
I've explored it many times and have eaten many a great meal here. There are many shops to explore (The Galleria is one of my favorites...it has many local artisans selling there wares on THREE floors...it's a great place to find...

Good restaurants ranging from Vegeterian (Kopi) to Mediterranean (Reza and Andie's) to breakfast (Ann Sather and M. Henry) to all around awesomeness (Big Jones). You can eat hear all day.
Hop Leaf has a good beer selection, but in my experience they have been jerks.
