During the summer the trails can be quite muddy, and the bugs can carry you off. During late fall and winter visibility is better because foliage isn't quite as thick and the bugs aren't as ferocious. Very nice family day for hiking and exploring cabins camp sites and boat slips available.

Cool ferry ride to the island (free), nice 2 mile trail to Indian mounds, and great place for kids to play in the playground area. A great way to see some of DeLand for free, and have a good time while learning about the area.

An afternoon on Hontoon Island is a step into the real Florida. Just a few minutes from DeLand, this state park is actually an island in the St. John River. When you arrive at the parking area, you will be met by a pontoon boat that will take you (not your vehicle) across the river to the park's boat landing.... More

We had a great time picnicking with our family on this little island state park - no admission charge, btw and a short little boat ride over. There are plenty of picnic tables, great scenery, a cute little playground (little and for the toddler set), but well maintained and just very different and quiet. Fun!

A very short boat ride (about 1 minute) and you can travel back in time to a Florida 2.000 years ago when the Timucuan Indians lived here. With miles of trails one can see indian shell mounds, live oaks, maple and pine trees, owls, eagles, hawks, vultures, deer, wildflowers, alligators, snakes and manatees. Cabins and tent sites are available for... More

I dont understand where other people complain about the lack of wildlife on this island. I have been camping here twice (and will be going back next weekend). Both times we saw amazing wildlife. The first time, we saw herds of deer romping through the trees and through the moon light. The second time a yound black bear decided he... More

Recently visited the park for a one night camping trip. Upon arrival we were taken over to the island by ferry by a park ranger (could have been staff or volunteer). This ranger was nice and helpful. The day went fairly well, until night set and more campers arrived. Quiet time is meant to be 11 pm, and when we... More

A nice, quiet little place. Quick, free ferry ride - just stand on the dock, and when the captain sees you from the other side, he'll come right over. Tiny, but nice, museum. Did one short hike. I was there in February and didn't see much wildlife - except for a great blue heron right next to the dock on... More

Its beautiful in the fall and winter - no skeeters! You can fish from shore - watch alligators from shore and hike in the woods - great for birdwatching and there is a great play area for children. Just a fun afternoon after a ride on the ferry over to the Island!

The island is only 1650 acres. I kayaked around it. It's 10 miles. You'll see lots of birds, gators, snakes (if you're lucky) and manatees swimming around you if it's cooler at night. The tent sights are somewhat close but are nice and restrooms and showers are close. There are water spigots that has good tasting portable water! Mosquitos are... More
