Light & Sons is Steamboat Springs’ historic clothing store and special place where customers enjoy a step back into the old west while browsing among many original fixtures from one hundred years ago.Founded in 1905 by Francis Marion Light (who preferred to be called Frank), the store is still family owned and operated by the fifth generation. The year 2005 marks the 100th anniversary of the F.M. Light & Sons store. A store still in the family after four generations and built on a philosophy of providing quality merchandise and fair prices. Celebrations in the community and within their store will take place all year long. Ty Lockhart puts the 100-year mark in perspective, “It’s not only a celebration about our family’s history, it’s also a celebration about Steamboat Springs and the many ranching families who made their homes here.” « less

When I worked just outside of Steamboat almost 2 summers ago, FM Light and Sons was where I went every week to shop! They have so many options, from high end to budget, but overall quality is their key factor! Yea the bright yellow signs on the highway can be a bit much if you drive the roads every day,... More

We had heard about this store from a friend and had seen all of the signs on our way to the mountain from the airport. We had so much fun here one afternoon while exploring downtown Steamboat. We'd never seen so many cowboy hats and boots in one place! Salesperson was very helpful and friendly without being pushy as my... More

Wouldn't you know, after perusing all the inexpensive souvenirs offered at many other shops, my boys wanted to come back to the store that offered western-themed items. Lured in by a free Oreo, they found the pop guns in the back, and I thank the staff for allowing the trying of everything offered, over and again. They settled on some... More

The most enjoyable shop we encountered on our trip to Steamboat. From taking pictures of the granchildren on the horse outside to walking through and trying on boots and hats inside, my family loved this store. They have something for everyone. It kind of reminds me of a merchantile store. Definitely stop by F.M. Light & Sons. More

If you go to Steamboat and don't at least drop by this store, you have missed a treat. This is the oldest store in the area, having been in business since 1905. It offers true Western memorabilia, a quaint atmosphere, and a friendly staff. More

Had so much fun in this shop... was such an adventure. It all started with a story of how amazing the shop was, my mate and brother had been there before. Then every sign along the way made it more and more enticing.... Arriving at Steamboat and eager to ski we didn't get there straight away... Fortunately, as in the... More

A fabulous experience. Peggy is the most dedicated sales person ever, if she would like to come to the UK she can come and work for me anytime. I bought a pair of wonderful boots, she was very patient and gave me a card to come back again tomorrow. She also helped us with local attractions and restaurants. Every firm... More

As far as "Western" apparel goes, many of the items sold at this establishment (historical or not) are tagged with overseas manufacturing labels. I found the "Made in China" label on too many items! When I want an historical American merchant, I look forward to seeing the "Made in USA" on the items sold there. Also, the gaudiness of apparrel... More

Thank you so much for your review; we are very sorry that you felt this way while visiting us. We work hard to provide products that are made in the USA, but finding such items can be very difficult. Alireiner is obviously not a native to the Steamboat area. The billboards or" SIGNS" (note correct spelling) for F.M. Light & Sons, are the only ones you will find in the Steamboat area, because they are protected as historical landmarks, many being close to a century old. Routt county has long since outlawed the placement of billboard advertising along highway... More

Great western ambiance and not nearly as touristy and overpriced as those shops in the 'disney-like' manufactured ski towns that I could name. They sell Stetsons and fancy luxury brands, but also Cathcart, a working man's clothing. I think this place is the 'real-deal'. Hard to say it's not authentic when they've been there since 1905, fifty years before the... More
