This was our 5th trip to Assateague Island. If you're into nature, photography and simply breathing in some fresh air this is the place to go. For the real experience of the island I highly recommend bringing or renting bicycles. Much of the island is off limits to car traffic. There are many roads and trails that bring you close... More

Assateague Island offers a serene and peaceful experience any time of the year! Be sure to reserve many hours to explore the island. The wild ponies are usually visible and don't seem to be bothered by the tourists.

This 60 mile island, in Virginia and Maryland, is very quiet and peaceful this time of the year. Of course, it is always beautiful. No vendors, restaurants, or tee shirt shops. Just the awesome sand and surf here.

I have now seen the island in all four seasons, and I love them all! If you're a horse lover, this island is a must. Beautiful trails, clean beach, and nice visitor centers.

The civilized part is that Assateague Island is easy to get to. You just drive across the bridge from Chincoteague Island and you enter another world, so near but so far from the things of man. The wild part is when you are walking north along the beach and not seeing another human being for miles, just the dancing birds... More

We have been staying at Maddox Campground for many years & love it so much that I want to leave my camper there permanately. The shore is an amazing 2 mile drive from the campground & we never miss a sunrise or sunset. Driving the loop, all the amazing birds that seem to pose for pics., the sitka deer, lighthouse,... More

Everyone congregates at this beach in the summer especially on the weekends lots of locals come in. The beach is clean, very large, and dolphins can be seen frequently in season swimming by everytime we are there. !!

The views are amazing the trails are great for walking and for bikes. If you come to see the horses then be prepared that they are good at hiding!

Have been coming to Assateague since childhood (30 years). No boardwalk and none of the junk that goes along with it. Just beautiful natural beach. There are daily educational activities that include kayaking, learning to surf fish, exploration, bird watching, history, science and more. You can see the wild ponies and dolphin EVERY day. Relax in one of the outdoor... More

This time of year it is very windy but as always there is nothing like hearing the sound of the ocean. The visitors center is open and is always a good place to stop in and visit and buy gifts. A lot of trees are down from Hurricane Sandy.
