View from near the top of old Donner highway is breathtaking and weather permitting, great spot for a picnic, sitting on a boulder. Check road conditions before driving here

Not sure if Donner Lake's history is family friendly -- although the older children will find the stories of adventure exciting and the cannibalism tantalizingly gruesome. Nonetheless the lake is scenic and with paved hiking trails and roads circling the edge, easily accessible for all levels of outdoor enthusiasists.

There's a lot here - more than meets the eye. You have to hike around, but the sierra pacific crest trail is here, great rock climbing, great views and clean air - not too far from the city.
